AHEPA Chapter 98, New Haven, Conn.
The chapter served as "home base" for the 2019 Hellenic History Tournament
and is proud the Aristotelians, the team sponsored by the chapter and coached
by Brother Manny Cosmas, captured first place. Supreme President George
Horiates and several officers from Region 4 attended the Nov. 23, 2019 event.
The team's win qualifies it to participate again in the national Hellenic History
Tournament at the 2020 Supreme Convention in Orlando, Fla. The Aristotelians
reached the semifinal round of the 2019 national tournament held at last year's
Supreme Convention. Separately, the chapter continues its support of homeless
military veterans at Harkness House in New Haven and brothers volunteer and
donate to the Rise Against Hunger program.
AHEPA Chapter 121, Pawtucket, R.I.
The chapter sponsored a CASA (Coats And Sweaters from Assumption) drive to
collect used clothes, especially sweaters and jackets, to be distributed to those in
need. The drive exceeded expectations. On behalf of the chapter and Assumption
parish, Brother Dr. Thomas Walsh and his wife, Marie, delivered five large boxes
and six bags of clothing, all of which were filled to capacity and weighed nearly
300 pounds to Providence Rescue Mission. The Mission is a Christian-based mission in Providence that provides food, clothing, and temporary shelter for the
urban poor.
Maud Howe Elliott Chapter 245, Newport, R.I.
The chapter completed its 90th year with its annual AHEPA Family Christmas
party at the Wyndham Newport Atlantic Resort in December. They were joined
by Ahepans from Chapter 121, Pawtucket, R.I., and their families, and Past
District 7 Governor Greg Simones. The AHEPA family youth sang traditional
Christmas kalanta and Vasilios Zarkadas played Greek and English Christmas
carols on his violin.
Winthrop Chapter 250, New London, Conn.
The chapter initiated Theodore "Ted" James Jr. into the Order on Jan. 20, 2020.
Ted is a third generation Ahepan continuing in the footsteps of his father and
Pappou, both of whom were Ahepans in Chapter 250. Ted's father, Theodore
James, Sr., served in WWII on a U.S. Navy minesweeper and had a career as an
electrician working for Enterprise Electric Company. Ted Jr.'s maternal grandfather, George P. Negris, arrived from Athens, Greece to New London, where he
started a family. During WWII, George was a U.S. Army Sergeant, participating
in the Normandy Invasion. After the war, he managed special events at the
Mohegan Hotel and the Groton Motor Inns.
