exclusively recognized by the respective Israeli and Palestinian governments, as well as by the Hashemite
Kingdom of Jordan. This puts
Patriarch Theophilos in a politically
critical position, even as the Church
upholds a purely spiritual mission.
"With the assistance of the civil
authorities, whose role is to ensure
the proper privileges of our religious
communities and with the collaboration of our fellow Christians around the world, the Patriarchate of
Jerusalem is able to be a true witness and a true minister to all and
for all," said Patriarch Theophilos in an address to the assembly
in Amman.
As head of all Christian communities in the Holy Land,
Patriarch Theophilos has enormous influence on laws that protect holy sites, religious freedom, and promote peace among
peoples of all races and creeds.
"One of the stumbling blocks of negotiations and the peace
process is Jerusalem and its holy sites," says Patriarch Theophilos.
"In this regard, the Churches, especially the Patriarchate can play

legal status in the Holy City.

the centuries-old custodianship of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem,

Bartholomew and Pope
Francis in Jerusalem at

because it has sparked a new era of
dialogue for unity and reconciliation.
Only two weeks after the Holy Land visit, Pope Francis,
in an unprecedented move, invited Patriarch Bartholomew,
Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem, Israeli President Shimon
Peres and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to the Vatican
to pray for peace.
In the meantime, another historic meeting took place in
Amman under the auspices of His Majesty King Abdullah ibn
Hussein of Jordan, although the Pope's visit had an eclipsing effect
on media coverage. At the invitation of King Abdullah, through
Patriarch Theophilos, the heads of Orthodox Churches met, in the
words of the King "as brothers," to discuss peaceful coexistence
between religions and common concerns regarding the protection
of Christian and Muslim holy sites in the Holy Land.
Whether unity between Churches, resolution to Middle East
conflict, or protection of holy sites by way of peaceful coexistence,
the common thread in this spring of dialogue is; Jerusalem.
The Patriarchate of Jerusalem is in a very unique position.
As the only local Christian institution of the Holy Land, it is
