Toronto Hosts Canada's
First Hellenic History Tournament
AHEPA Beaver District 23 held its first Hellenic History Tournament at Upper Canada
College, Toronto, Ont., April 28, 2018. Sixteen teams comprised of 44 students from
grades 8 to 12 participated.
The "Three Degrees of Separation" team comprised of John Papanikolaou,
Victoria Poulos and Caroline Cansfield captured first place and a prize of $3,000
($1,000 to each).
"I heard about the Hellenic History Tournament through a few friends,"
Papanikolaou said. "I entered it so that I could learn more about Greek history in a
fun and competitive way."
He added, "We met some extremely tough competition, particularly in the
semi-finals and final. We won the tournament in overtime, answering just one more
correct question than the other team."
Second place honors went to the "Greek Geeks" team comprised of Lydia Tzianas
and Nathan Pipilas. They received a $1,000 prize ($500 to each). Both teams will
participate at the national tournament to be held at the Supreme Convention in
Atlantic City, N.J.
District 23 Vice President of Hellenism Dr.
Byron Yankou chaired the tournament. Chicago
Chapter 205 President Themis Frangos contributed to the tournament's success, participating as
Head Judge, as did Upper Canada College History
Teacher Christos Paschalidis. Organizers appreciated the support of parents, teachers, scorekeepers, moderators, sponsors with a special thanks
to UCC Principal Sam McKinney. Hon. Alexandros
Ioannidis, consul general of Greece in Toronto,
attended.
District 13 Awards 23 Scholarships
AHEPA Blue Ribbon District 13 held its annual scholarship awards
dinner in May. For 56 years, the district's Educational Foundation
has awarded scholarships to more than 1,100 students, totaling
$800,000. This year, the foundation awarded scholarships to 23
students, totaling more than $40,000.
At the dinner, the district was honored to have His Eminence
Metropolitan Nathanael of Chicago attend the banquet and help
present the scholarships. Metropolitan Nathanael was gracious
with his time and spoke to the students at length before the program started which was a wonderful experience for the students
and heartwarming for the parents and adults.
