The AHEPAN - Winter 2016 - 13

Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, New Brunswick, N.J.
for their study on the Use of Platinum-Based Chemotherapy &
Biomarker Discovery for Improved Outcomes in Triple Negative
Breast Cancer. Principal Investigator Kim M. Hirshfield,
M.D., Ph.D., accepted the grant on behalf of herself and
Co-Investigators Deborah Toppmeyer, M.D. & Shridar Ganesan,
M.D. Ph.D., who was the 2015 Axios Award recipient.
Weill Medical College of Cornell University/Children's Blood
Foundation, New York, N.Y. for their study on the Development
of novel exosome-nanoparticle hybrid anti-cancer drug carriers
for treating patients with breast cancer and pediatric cancer.
Principal Investigator David C. Lyden, M.D., Ph.D., and Surgical
Fellow, Constantinos Zambirinis, MD, Ph.D., accepted the grant
award.
Coming full circle, the Foundation believed Fox Chase
Cancer Center-the Foundation's first grant recipient-had
to be awarded the grant that achieved the $1 million mark
in grant-giving. Erica Golemis, Ph.D., accepted the grant on
behalf of herself and her team at Fox Chase Cancer Center,

Philadelphia, Pa., for their study on Investigating STA-8666, a
Novel HSP90-Inhibitor Drug Conjugate to Sn38, in Prevention
and Control of Lung Cancer.
As balloons were released to mark this significant moment,
and to the surprise of the guests, the Fralinger Mummers String
Band joyfully marched in to celebrate the Foundation's achievement, and indeed, "Marched to a Million!" The Foundation's
total reached $1,005,000.
"So we march on to raise our next $1 million," MarousisZachariades said, adding that the Foundation is the only cancer
research foundation in the AHEPA family. "The uniqueness
of these grants is that one-hundred percent of the monetary
award goes toward the sole purpose of cancer research and not
to administrative costs."
Guests came from all over the United States, Canada
and Greece to be a part of this historical milestone. Further,
the Foundation was honored that U.S. Representative Frank
Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) attended and commemorated the special
evening with the community.
Congressman Pallone, an Ahepan, is also a ranking member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, which oversees
health care policy, including biomedical research and development at the National Institutes of Health. He spoke about the
21st Century Cures Act and Moon Shot on Cancer Research
Top Left: Celebration! The Mummers strumming and marching and
balloons galore marked the Foundation's surpassing of $1 million in
research grant-giving.
Top Right: Foundation Chairwoman Marousis-Zachariades presents a
$20,000 grant to Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.
Middle Right: Chairwoman Marousis-Zachariades with Congressman
Pallone.
Bottom Left: Past and present Supreme Lodge officers were on-hand
to celebrate the Foundation's milestone.
