AHEPA National Invitational Basketball Tournament Returns
to Supreme Convention after Three-Year Hiatus
Costa Papademetriou, AHEPA National Basketball Director
Additional Reporting by DCGreeks.com Sports & Stats
The AHEPA Athletics department hosted the 81st AHEPA
'Van Nomikos' National Basketball tournament at the Stupak
Community Center in Las Vegas, Nev., from July 27 to 29,
2016, during the 94th AHEPA Supreme Convention. Seven
teams, including two from Chicago, and one each from New
York, Pittsburgh, Houston, Denver and Boston played in
eleven, 32-minute stopped-clock games in the double-elimination tournament.
The Championship saw Losers Bracket Champion New
York beat Winners Bracket Champion Panathinaikos Chicago,
84-68 in its final game of a back-to-back-to-back and a rematch
of Wednesday's first round 76-73 thriller. In Wednesday's
match-up, offense was fully on display (and defense was
in short supply), as the 149-point combined score was the
highest total of the tournament prior to the Championship
game. The Championship Game total topped it by three, as
the teams combined for 152 points. After surviving a frantic
opening seven minutes which saw three lead changes and
four ties with teams combining for 11 made 3-pointers, New
York unleashed a 13-0 run over the next three minutes to go
up 35-22 with six minutes left in the first half. A Panathinaikos
Chicago 3-pointer by George Itsines cut New York's lead to
only 5 points at 61-56 with eight minutes left in the game, but
that would be the closest they would come, as they ended the
game 0-for-11 from behind the arc and New York converted
14 of 20 free-throw attempts during that span to expand their
lead to as much as 17 points. New York benefitted from its
most balanced scoring of the tournament, as player-coach
Nectar Papadopoulos chipped in 19 points (5-11 FGs, 6-6
FTs), Dimitri Douvres continued his strong afternoon with 21
points (7-14 FGs, 6-7 FTs) and a game-high 14 rebounds, and
Peter Papastefanou led all scorers with 30 points. Guard Peter
Prassos dished out a game-high five assists with no turnovers
to go along with 8 points. Panathinaikos Chicago was once
again paced by George Itsines and his blistering 3-point shooting, as he scored 28 points on 8-for-12 (66.7%) from threepoint land and 10-for-15 overall. Dimitri Itsines and Nick
Giannakoulias contributed with 16 and 12 points respectively.

player-coach Nectar Papadopoulos accepted the Championship
trophy on behalf of the champs, backing up his claim that his
team never loses rematches. The Tournament MVP trophy
was awarded to Peter Papastefanou (36 PPG, 6.2 RPG), who
carried the offensive load for New York; scoring no fewer than
28 points in any of the five games he played. Joining him on
the All-Tournament Team were New York's Dimitri Douvres
(16.8 PPG, 10.8 RPG, 2.4 APG) and Nectar Papadopoulos (11.6
PPG, 5.0 RPG), Panathinaikos Chicago's George Itsines (20.8

Sports Chicago's Billy Quiroga (23.5 PPG, 12.5 RPG) and Alexi
Vogdanos (15.5 PPG, 9.0 RPG), Pittsburgh's Alex Guminski
(11.0 PPG, 6.0 RPG, 3.5 SPG) and Michael Ost (6.5 PPG, 9.0
