AHEPA Chapter 140, Albany, N.Y.
The Capital Region Greek
American community gathered on the Albany Hudson
River waterfront for a commemoration of Oxi Day, Oct.
28. The USS Slater hosted an
Oxi Day, Greek flag-raising
ceremony. The historic ship
is the only remaining WWIIera destroyer escort afloat in
the United States. It served
both the Atlantic and Pacific
theatres. After the war, the
ship was transferred to the
Hellenic Navy as part of the
Military Defense Assistance
Program where it was
renamed AETOS (Eagle) and
served for 40 years. Rev. Fr.
Dennis Nagi, Ph.D., gave a
historic overview of Greece's
heroic involvement in WWII.
Constantine Cassis Chapter 170,
Hempstead, N.Y.
The chapter hosted a successful Octoberfest,
October 23, 2016, at the Cathedral of St. Paul,
Hempstead, N.Y. The theme of the Octoberfest
was to recognize General Karl August Krazeisen,
a Bavarian soldier, philhellene and portraitist. He
used his artistic ability to draw and create portraits
of the heroes of Greek Independence. His album
presented these heroes in full military garb and was
published seven times. The help by Bavaria was the
first public support to show the world their support
for the Greeks to gain their Independence. Chapter
President Dionysios Dionou personally cooked the
Octoberfest menu and presented the lecture about
General Krazeisen.
