Obama commended Greek Americans
who have "worn the uniform to keep
our country free," who marched with Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr., and in an example of the shared spirt of resilience, cited
how Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox
Church, once in ruins, is rising again."

Supreme President Attended Events
in Athens
Supreme President Andrew C.
Zachariades attended events surrounding the visit of President Barack Obama
to Athens, Greece, to meet with Greece's
leaders. Notably, he represented AHEPA
at the State Dinner hosted for President
Obama by President of Greece Prokopis
Pavlopoulos, Nov. 15.
"It was truly an honor for AHEPA
to be represented at such a historical
event," he said. "On behalf of our international membership, I was grateful
for the opportunity to attend."
Supreme President Zachariades,
who is the CFO for FBE Limited LLC,
also attended a business-oriented event
with the goal of introducing young Greek
entrepreneurs to members of the broader
business community-including members of the diaspora business community. The U.S. Embassy and The Hellenic
Initiative organized the event, which was
held Nov. 14. U.S. Ambassador Geoffrey
Pyatt attended.
"It is critical for the diaspora, and
organizations such as AHEPA, to be a
resource for Greek entrepreneurs who
are aiming to revitalize Greece and its
economy following a crippling economic crisis," Zachariades said.

AHEPA Continues Public Health
Assistance to Greece
In September, AHEPA's Committee for the AHEPA Hospital in Thessaloniki facilitated
the donation of 16 hospital beds to the hospital. AHEPA Chapter CJ5, Ottawa, Ontario,
was instrumental in securing the donation from the Children's Hospital of Eastern
Ontario (CHEO). Present for the delivery of the beds were: Brother John Kottas, chapter HJ3 president; Dr. Anastasios Spanos, Board of Directors president; Past District 25
Governor Dr. A.J. Barich, who is a Board of Directors member of the AHEPA Hospital;
Mrs. Kokoni Koutsianda, administrative head nurse; Hristos Karapiperis, District
25 representative; and Director
of Hospital Administration
Vassilis Anastasiadis.
"We are deeply grateful
to the Children's Hospital
of Eastern Ontario for making a generous donation to
help the people of Greece,"
Supreme President Andrew
C. Zachariades said. "We commend the Brothers of Ottawa
Chapter CJ5 for taking the initiative to provide this aid to
Greece and applaud AHEPA's
Committee for the AHEPA
Hospital for facilitating the
donation from the Children's
Hospital of Eastern Ontario.
AHEPA will continue to find
ways for the delivery of public health assistance to Greece
during this time of need."
Past Canadian President Mrs. Koutsianda and Dr. Barich at the AHEPA Hospital in
Thessaloniki following the delivery of hospital beds.
George Vassilas, who chairs
the committee, thanked the Brothers from Ottawa: Nicolas Hatzitheodosiou, George
Papadopoulos, George Alibalis, and Dr. Michael Vassilyadi, for their hard work and
introduction to CHEO. According to Vassilas, the beds were put into circulation
immediately upon their delivery.
Vassilas added, "We continue to seek more donors as there is still a great need
among hospitals. However, the beds must meet certain criteria, and they are significant."
According to Vassilas, the beds must be less than 10 years old and must be able
to be serviced in Greece, among other requirements.
Past Supreme Governor Phil Vogis also assisted the committee's efforts with the
delivery of the beds.
