AHEPA Commemorates
Oxi Day on Ellis Island

AHEPA commemorated the 77th anniversary of Oxi Day with an event on
Ellis Island that featured a lecture and film presentation as well as a reception, Oct. 28, 2017. Approximately 200 persons attended and paid tribute
to the heroic valor of the Greek people who repelled the Axis invasion,
Oct. 28, 1940. AHEPA Hudson Chapter 108, Jersey City, N.J., spearheaded
the event.
Past District 5 Governor Asteris Fanikos spoke about the Greek immigrant experience and Brother Louis Katsos, Delphi Chapter 25, detailed
the courage of the Greeks during the Oxi Day resistance. Among those
joining with the AHEPA family to mark the anniversary were: Consul
General of Greece in New York Dr. Konstantinos Koutras, the newly-appointed Consul General of Greece in New York Lana Zochiou, and the
Director of the Department of State of New Jersey Rowena Madden.
The iconic Ellis Island, which welcomed 12 million immigrants, provided the perfect backdrop to the educational event.
In a statement, Supreme President Carl R. Hollister quoted President
Franklin D. Roosevelt, an Ahepan, who told the Supreme Lodge in an April
25, 1941 meeting: "The heroic struggle of the Greek people to defend their
liberties and their homes against the aggression of Germany after they had
so signally defeated the Italian attempt at invasion has stirred the hearts
and aroused the sympathy of the whole American people."
"We were honored to work with District 6 Governor Ted Stamas, and
the AHEPA family from District Six, to reach a wider audience," District
5 Governor Dr. Zenon Christodoulou said. "We are eager to continue our
efforts annually to ensure this landmark event in Greek history is never
forgotten."
AHEPA, IOCC Team-up
for New Aid to Greece
AHEPA presented IOCC with a $20,000 check for aid to Greece,
Oct. 29, 2017, during the IOCC Philadelphia-area's 25th Anniversary
banquet. Supreme Treasurer George G. Horiates presented the gift
to IOCC Development Officer Louis Zagami and IOCC Philadelphia
Committee Chair Anthony Pantazopoulos.
The donation will subsidize an eighth shipping container of medical supplies to hospitals in Greece. Over the years, AHEPA and IOCC
have provided goods worth $7 million to people in that country.
