Athletic Excellence Honored at Supreme Convention
The AHEPA National Athletic Department presented awards to outstanding
athletes, scholar-athletes, and former
athletes at its Athletic Luncheon held
at the 93rd Supreme Convention, July
3, San Francisco, Calif. The luncheon
presented a special opportunity to recognize Hellenes who excel in their
individual sports or who display excellence in the classroom, on the field
of athletics and volunteerism within
their respective communities. They
are committed to perpetuating and
promoting these ideals, all part of the
AHEPA family's mission.
"We are thrilled to present our
national AHEPA athletic awards," then
Supreme President Phillip T. Frangos
said. "Each recipient is truly deserving
of the accolades they have received
during their athletic careers. They have
worked extremely hard to achieve

excellence and reach great heights in
their respective sport."

NBA Rising Star, Standout College
Hoops Player Receive National
Honors
Giannis Antetokounmpo, professional basketball player, Milwaukee
Bucks, and member, Greek National
Basketball team, received the prestigious AHEPA Harry Agganis Hellenic
Athlete Award. He was a first-round
draft pick (15th overall) of the Bucks
and has been named to the 2014
Second Team, All-Rookie team, and
he participated in the 2015 NBA Slam
Dunk Contest. Gianni was born in
Athens, is a Greek citizen and a member of the Greek National Team.
Zachary Elias Auguste, collegiate
basketball player, University of Notre
Dame, received the AHEPA William
Chirgotis Collegiate Scholar-Athlete

Award. Zach is entering his senior
year, having been a two-year starter.
He spearheaded one of Notre Dame's
greatest seasons ever, 32-6 this past
season. The team finished in the Top
10. Zach averaged 12.9 points and 6.5
rebounds. He also played basketball
for St. Anargyriou Greek Orthodox
Church, Marlborough, Mass.

Four Inducted into Hall of Fame
The AHEPA Hellenic Athletic Hall of
Fame Class of 2015 were:
*
Theodore ("Ted") Leonsis,
founder, chairman, majority owner
and CEO of Monumental Sports &
Entertainment, which owns and
operates the Washington Capitals
(NHL), Washington Wizards (NBA),
and Washington Mystics (WNBA);
*
Christina Loukas, College AllAmerican and U.S. Olympian in
Diving;
*
Bob Barnek, College basketball
player; and
*
Paul J. Kaliades, College football
and baseball player.
"The 2015 Induction Class is comprised of individuals who have reached
the highest levels of their respective
areas of competition or sports industry," then Supreme President Frangos
said. "They are held in high esteem
and regard by the Greek American
community as well as their colleagues
and peers."
