AHEPA FAMILY CHAPTER NEWS
District 7
Winthrop Chapter 250, New London, Conn.
The chapter hosted the Yankee District 7 Scholarship Dinner at
St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, New London. Nineteen worthy students received scholarships from the Mary and Angelo
Pappas; Macricostas; Peter E. Mitchell Memorial and DOP District
7 Scholarship Funds along with Sam Nakos AHEPA Education
Foundation. Three recipients were from Chapter 250: Christina
Flynn, Zoe Mazzulli, and Greg Simones. Dr. Sadie (Barchini)
Elisseau, primary care physician at the VA Medical Center in
Providence, R.I. and assistant professor of Clinical Medicine at
Brown University, was the guest speaker. She is also a Maids of
Athena past grand treasurer and former scholarship recipient.
District 11
AHEPA Chapter 59, Canton, Ohio
In July, Brother Joey Tortora competed in the Reebok CrossFit® Games
held in Carson, Calif as a member of Team Crossfit Grandview, a gym
rated by Men's Fitness magazine as one of The Top 50 Gyms in America
and number one in Ohio. The Reebok CrossFit® Games are the world's
premier test to find "The Fittest on Earth." Since its inception in 2007,
the CrossFit Games have become "one of the fastest growing sports
in America," according to Forbes. Brother Tortora led his team to an
astounding finish, making Crossfit Grandview the 8th ranked team in
the entire world. Brother Tortora is a senior at The Ohio State University,
and his proud Papou is Past Supreme Governor Phil Giavasis.
George E. Loucas Chapter 480,
North Royalton, Ohio
The chapter hosted former head coach of the Cleveland
Browns Sam Rutigliano as a guest speaker. More than
80 members from several chapters in northeastern Ohio
attended. The chapter's educational foundation presented
a $500 donation to Coach Rutigliano and Dr. Collins, who
founded the Inner Circle for Inner City Children and provide educational support and athletic programs for underprivileged kids. National Board of Trustees Member George
Loucas, a noted Steelers fan, was "forced" to wear a Browns
cap for the occasion-all in good fun.
