that their father had a store at 30 Pericleous Street in Athens,
the address to which President Truman sent his thank you letter.
They knew the story of the painting that their father had
sent to the 33rd president of the United States. Drakos had emotionally recounted it countless times. It goes like this...
George N. Drakos owned a fur store in downtown Athens
in the 1950s. In December 1953, he took a trip to Kansas City,
Missouri to visit an uncle who owned several restaurants in the
city. His uncle had immigrated to the States in the 1930s and
was a U.S. citizen with a thriving business in Kansas City.
One day, George Drakos and his uncle were walking on the
streets of Kansas City. Who else happened to be out walking
that day? Former President Truman. As Truman approached,
Drakos' uncle told him it was the former president. As they
crossed paths, Drakos, who did not speak English, stopped,
doffed his hat and bowed in a show of respect. President
Truman stopped and thanked Drakos and then inquired as
to where he was from. His uncle explained Drakos was from
Greece, and after a short conversation, President Truman
extended an invitation to the two gentlemen to visit his home
in Independence.
Subsequently, Drakos and his uncle did visit Truman. When
they were all settled in at Truman's house, Drakos
thanked President Truman for
