PERICLEAN Sons of Pericles Lays Groundwork for New Year By Sons of Pericles Supreme President John Ververis The Sons of Pericles delegation convened on August 17 at the national convention to close out one year and usher in a new one. Our productive meeting focused on developing a plan of action for the expansion of the Sons of Pericles in the coming year. The Sons also elected a new Supreme Lodge. The new leadership team includes: Supreme President John Ververis, Supreme Vice President Jimmy Googas, Supreme Secretary Andreas Christou, Supreme Treasurer Jason Vergados, Supreme Governors Nikolas Apostolou, Steven Gagas and Vasilios Mallios, and Supreme Athletic Director Panagiotis Tsevdos. Past AHEPA Supreme Governor Jimmy Kokotas was appointed as the new National Advisor of the Sons of Pericles. Outgoing AHEPA Supreme President Dr. John Grossomanides conducted the installation of the new Supreme Lodge officers at the conclusion of the convention. In addition to the meeting, the Sons and Maids hosted their annual awards brunch. We honored the members and chapters whose exemplary efforts serve as models to the rest of their orders. We were honored to have Supreme President Grossomanides and Daughters of Penelope Grand President Joanne Saltas in attendance at the brunch. Other convention festivities included a fun Greek Night at Taverna Opa, where many members of the AHEPA family gathered for a night of good friends, good food, and good music! Sons and Maids Team Up for National Project, Exceed Fundraising Goals For the second consecutive year, the Sons of Pericles and the Maids of Athena teamed up to support the Friedreich's Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA) for our National Project. This is a cause near and dear to our hearts as a fellow member has been diagnosed with this debilitating disorder. FARA is dedicated to curing Friedreich's ataxia through research, drug development, clinical trials, and scientific conferences. The organization also serves as a catalyst between the public and scientific community. Confident in our mission, the Sons and Maids raised the bar on this year's FARA fundraising goal. This year we aimed to raise $25,000 for FARA, far surpassing last year's $10,000 goal. Events were at the core of our fundraising strategy. While we hosted our classic 50/50 National Raffle, we also kicked our events up a notch. We hosted a fun casino night during the Sons' Greeks in LA Basketball Tournament. Maids took it a step further with funfetti-style bake sales. Local chapters were also encouraged to plan their own events. While the final numbers are still being tallied, initial reports indicate the Sons and Maids successfully raised more than $29,000! We commend our chapters as well as their membership, and are very grateful for the support of the entire AHEPA family. 2 | THE AHEPAN · Fall 2013
