AHEPA FAMILY CHAPTER NEWS District 1 Mother Lodge Chapter 1, Atlanta, Ga. The chapter's Educational Fund presented scholarships totaling $61,950 to 44 students from the greater Atlanta area at its 27th Scholarship Awards Ceremony held June 2. More than 250 family members, friends, and members of the AHEPA family attended. Dr. Pandeli Durbetaki, chairman, AHEPA Chapter 1 Educational Fund, provided opening remarks. Board Members Athena Economy, Karen Stamatiades and Keath Paxten presented the scholarships. Traditionally, scholarships are presented in memory of deceased AHEPA and Daughters of Penelope members. This year, scholarships were presented in memory of Peter F. Zervakos and Janice Tsurutis. Since 1986, more than $583,950 in scholarship money has been awarded to students at the college and post-baccalaureate level to help them with their college education. The fund serves the cultural and educational programs of AHEPA Chapter 1, DOP Chapter 53, and AHEPA Chapter 519, Marietta., Ga. CIVIC RESPONSIBILITY A Capitol Hill Day Success Story: A Chapter Helps Local School System An AHEPA chapter's participation at AHEPA's annual Capitol Hill Day in May resulted in its involvement to help strengthen its local public school system in August. AHEPA Chapter 205, Chicago, raised more than $1,200 to donate new school supplies for underprivileged children from kindergarten to high school with new school supplies for the upcoming school year through a back-to-school program coordinated through U.S. Rep. Danny Davis' (D-IL) office in Illinois. The chapter's $1,200 purchased school supplies that included: calculators, notebooks, Chapter 205 President Themistocles Frangos with U.S. Representative Danny Davis. folders, binders, pencils, markers, and other items. The chapter participation in the back-to-school program was a result of the meeting during the AHEPA Capitol Hill Day program where members of AHEPA Chapter 205 met with Rep. Davis. Davis, a member of the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues, mentioned the opportunity to support local public schools after chapter members expressed interest in helping local programs. Reactivated at the end of 2012, Chapter 205 meets in downtown Chicago and currently has 23 members who are young professionals in the city. 24 | THE AHEPAN ยท Fall 2013
