ATHLETICS Milwaukee Ahepan Captures National Invitational Golf Tournament Honors AHEPA Athletics was proud to host the National Invitational Golf Tournament in Tarpon Springs, Fla., at the fabulous Innisbrook Golf Resort. More than 35 Brothers participated representing chapters from all across the United States. There were three flights or groupings based on handicap, as well as a championship flight for those who had handicaps of nine or lower. Brother Steve Itsines, Milwaukee Chapter 43, emerged as the overall champion of the tournament. He shot the lowest overall score and has qualified for the Monthe Kofos Memorial Golf Tournament to be held this spring. The winners of the low net scores of each of the flights were: "A" Flight - Sandy Papadopoulos, Mother Lodge Chapter 1, Atlanta; "B" Flight - Mike Bolis, Northshore Chapter 94, Chicago; and "C" Flight - Jim Spyrakos, Northshore Chapter 94, Chicago. AHEPA Athletics thanks everyone who participated and supported the event. "We would like all of the brotherhood to know that we are doing our very best to make sure that we provide high quality affordable golf outings for everyone of all ages and golfing abilities," Athletics National Golf Director Sandy Papadopoulos said. "We would love to see all of the AHEPA family represented at these events. " Papadopoulos announced the Monthe Kofos Memorial Golf Tournament will be held in Las Vegas, March 11-15, 2014. Mid-Southern Regional Golf Tourney Held Hall of Fame Inductee Galaris Passes Away box lunches delivered to their respective golf carts while playing, and awards and prizes at the conclusion of the day. Proceeds from the tournament benefit the chapter's scholarship program. Althea Brown Palmetto Chapter 284, Columbia, S.C., hosted its annual Mid-Southern Regional Golf Tournament at the beautiful Cobblestone Park Golf Club, outside of Columbia. Top honors went to the foursome of: Mike Malone, Nick Leventis, Peter Leventis and Tommy Billas. More than 40 golfers participated. They were treated to sausage biscuits at tee time, 10 | THE AHEPAN ยท Winter 2013 AHEPA mourns the passing of AHEPA Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2009 Inductee, John D. Galaris. Galaris was born in Manchester, N.H., attended schools in Salem and Peabody, Mass., graduated from Salem State College and earned a Master's Degree from Suffolk University. John enjoyed a distinguished basketball career at Salem State College as a threetime small-college All-American, followed by a professional basketball career in Greece. Thereafter, John served in many roles at Salem State, including being on the Presidential Selection Committee and then as the Director of Athletics. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Mary Ellen Galaris of Salem, two sons, Sean and James, and two grandchildren.
