Connecticut Grant Sparks Creative Aging
Thanks to a grant from the Connecticut State Department
of Economic and Community Development, three AHEPA
senior living communities' residents from Niantic, Conn.,
participated in a 10-session Drum and Dance Workshop
during June and July.
Residents learned about Ghana and its relationship to
music and dance. The residents practiced on native drums,
bells, and rattles and received instruction on dance rhythms
and steps along with the instruments. This workshop built
upon the skills learned from week-to-week and prepared
them for a performance for their peers held on July 28. The
performance featured 15 residents who performed for an
audience of 40 residents.
Besides being a hit and lots of fun, the workshop served as a great isolation prevention event. It gave residents time to get to know
each other better while supporting each other during the process. The connections they made will lead to plans for future gatherings
between them, including among those who did not know each other prior to the workshop.
AHEPA Communities Celebrate Older Americans Month
Older adults play vital, positive roles in our communities, as
family members, friends, mentors, volunteers, civic leaders,
members of the workforce, and more. Just as every person is
unique, so too is how they age and how they choose to do it.
There is no " right " way. That's why the theme chosen for Older
Americans Month (OAM) 2022 was " Age My Way. "
The theme focuses on how older adults can age in their
communities, living independently for as long as possible and
participating in ways they choose. This year, AHEPA communities
were excited to celebrate OAM with partners in the aging
community and residents. Throughout May, AHEPA communities
hosted events for residents and shared information about
healthy aging with those who need it. They ranged from fun
fests, ice cream socials and cookouts to activities that sparked
creativity in our residents.
AHEPA 245 Senior Apartments residents of Newport, R.I., celebrated
creativity as part of Older Americans Month and its theme, " Age My Way. "
