events. In December of 1924 Supreme President V.I. Chebithes
appealed to all AHEPA chapters to assist in the sponsorship of
Greek orphans, left homeless after the Asia Minor Disaster of
1922, and whom Greece had taken in from Asia Minor.
Henry Morgenthau Sr., who had served as U.S. ambassador
to the Ottoman Empire and had exposed the genocide of the
Armenians and Greeks, and later, was active in the Greek Refugee
Settlement Commission, was an honored guest in AHEPA's
annual excursion to Greece in 1930. And AHEPA's magazine
published an important article by the philhellene, U.S. Consul
General in Smyrna George Horton, whose book The Blight of Asia
recorded his hair-raising eye witness account of the burning of
Smyrna and his efforts to save the Greeks.
Greece's next war, that began when it bravely rejected
Mussolini's Italy's attempted invasion in October 1940, found
AHEPA ready to offer substantial help. With the blessing of
Archbishop Athenagoras prominent Greek Americans along
with several American philhellenes formed the Greek War Relief
Association (GWRA) to send clothing, food and medicines to Greece
to aid the war effort against Italy. Film mogul Spyros P. Skouras,
a longtime AHEPA member was president. Working under the

banner of the GWRA, AHEPA chapters throughout the United
States bore the brunt of a magnificent effort to support Greece.
More than $300,000 was raised by December 1, 1940,
when the first count was taken. The American Red Cross
notified AHEPA in January 1941, that a total of $1,176,000
was being shipped to Greece. By May 1941, the Greek War
Relief Association had sent almost four million dollars in food
and supplies to Greece, and a Department of State report
stated that the overhead expenses of the Greek War Relief
Association were the lowest of the 350 relief organizations
listed in the report.
In the immediate aftermath of WWII, Greece made a number
of territorial claims at the Peace Conference that met in Paris in
1946. These included primarily the incorporation of the Italianruled Dodecanese islands and of Albanian-ruled Northern Epirus
into Greece. AHEPA formed a " Justice for Greece " committee to
publicize Greece's claims among American lawmakers and the
United Nations. Honorary Chairman of the Committee was former First Lady Grace Coolidge, with Supreme President Harris J.
Booras and Past Supreme President George E. Phillies also participating.
