The AHEPAN Spring 2021 - 17

The initiatives Greek Americans and AHEPA took in 1974
inaugurated a new era in their support of Hellenism. The mobilization was even more explicitly aligned with America's interest,
because the demand was for an embargo on U.S. arms sale to
Turkey, which had illegally used American military hardware in
its attack on Cyprus. The mobilization was also very effective
because it yielded a lobbying effort which persuaded the U.S.
Congress to act and impose an embargo that lasted between
1975 and 1978. It also served to create a permanent force in
Washington, D.C. known collectively as the Greek American
lobby, within which AHEPA played and still plays a central role
from the moment of its emergence in 1974. As was the case
during WWII when the GWRA relied on AHEPA's local chapters to support Greece's war effort, it was the AHEPA's chapters
throughout the United States and Canada that mobilized Greek
Americans either directly or indirectly by forming committees to
support the Cyprus cause.
In a Memorandum of Conversation between President Gerald
Ford and West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt recorded July
27, 1975, in Bonn, West Germany, President Ford said of AHEPA,
" We tried to explain this to over 300 people in the House, at three
breakfasts at the White House. But the Greek Americans have a
very effective lobby in AHEPA. It was more effective in this case
than the Israeli lobby. They were intelligent; well organized and
emotional. " (U.S. Department of State, " Foreign Relations of the
United States, 1969-1976. " Volume E-15, Part 2. Documents on
Western Europe, 1973-1976, Kathleen B. Rasmussen, Editor.)
AHEPA maintained its focus on the Cyprus issue throughout
the years the embargo was in force, and also after the Carter
administration lifted the embargo in 1978.
AHEPA emerged from the lobbying efforts of the second
half of the 1970s with a newfound commitment, experience
and knowledge. In the decades that followed it would put this
to good use in conveying its membership wishes to stand by
Greece and Cyprus to and American lawmakers. At the core of
AHEPA's action lay the commitment to show how Hellenic and
American values coincided and how close relations between the
United States and Cyprus contributed to peace and stability in the
Eastern Mediterranean.
Thus, AHEPA was very much present during regional crisis
such those triggered by the break-up of Yugoslavia in the 1990s,
the Greco-Turkish dispute over islands in the Aegean in the mid1990s, and the obstacles Turkish authorities posed to the Greek
Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.
AHEPA has been recognized by the U.S. Department of
State for its ''Track Two Diplomacy'' to foster reconciliation and

rapprochement in the Eastern Mediterranean, which is in the
best interest of the United States and Greece. In 1996, AHEPA
was the first Greek American organization to visit Ankara to meet
with Turkish government officials to open dialogue to discuss
matters pertaining to relations with Greece and Cyprus and religious freedom.
From 2006 to 2010, AHEPA's role to advocate for the successful implementation of the most significant and tangible policy
development for people-to-people ties in U.S.-Greece relations,
Greece's entry in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program, is well-documented and received commendation by U.S. and Greek government officials at the time. U.S. Rep. John Sarbanes, an Ahepan,
said, " For several years the Greek American community, with
the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association
(AHEPA) at the forefront, and many members of Congress, have
long sought this designation for Greece. "
From 2010 onwards, when Greece, Israel and Cyprus began
forging close trilateral ties, AHEPA expressed its support and
contributed by: organizing a groundbreaking foreign policy conference in Washington, D.C. that featured the ambassadors to the
United States of each of the three countries; co-holding several
roundtable discussions with American Hellenic and American
Jewish community groups and their leaders, and collaborating
on landmark Leadership Missions with American Hellenic and
American Jewish organizations to Israel, Greece, and Cyprus.
Under the leadership of Supreme President George Horiates,
AHEPA again redoubled its efforts and created a global Americanbased movement to " Defend Hellenism. " To address recent significant Turkish provocations, AHEPA has in this new era played
a critical role in the recognition of the Armenian and greater
Christian genocide in the United States House of Representatives,
exposed corruption by Turkish agents on United States officials,
was instrumental in a partial lifting of the arms embargo on
Cyprus and most recently led a successful campaign to Sanction
Turkey for its violations of United States laws. Currently, AHEPA
leads a campaign to Boycott Turkish products in the wake of the
unauthorized conversion of Hagia Sophia from a museum into
a mosque.
This year, in which Greece celebrates the 200th anniversary
of the Greek revolution, AHEPA stands by to again lead the diaspora in this celebration, having signed a memorandum of understanding with Greece for its 2021 Supreme Convention during the
Bicentennial summer this July. The commemoration of this event
is an opportunity to highlight the historical connection between
the people of Greece, the United States and in all countries where
AHEPA promotes its Western values.
