D-Day Veteran Brother Demas Passes Away at 103
Technical Sergeant George A. Demas, one of our original " Devils in Baggy
Pants, " made his final jump on November 13, 2021, passing away at the age
of 103.
Brother George was born 104 years ago on December 25, 1917, in Krokees
(Levetsova), Laconia, Greece. He arrived in New York City from Greece in 1927
to be reunited with his family.
In 1941, he joined the U.S. Army and was assigned to the 82nd Infantry
Division, later re-designated as the 82nd Airborne Division. Brother Demas,
known to his friends as " Geronimo, " took part in the July 9, 1943, invasion of
Sicily, paratrooping at night during Operation Husky. While he was assigned
to the 504 Airborne Regiment, he took part in operations in Salerno, Naples,
Monte Casino, and Anzio, where he was wounded.
Despite his wounds, Brother George participated in the Allied invasion
of Europe, D-Day, on June 6, 1944, paratrooping into Normandy, France.
On September 17, 1944, he took part in Operation " Market Garden " in the
Netherlands, a daytime " drop, " the largest airborne operation of all time. He
sustained wounds to the chest on November 6, 1944, and while being transported
to the hospital, he was shot in the leg.
For his military service, Brother George received several awards, including
three Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star for bravery, the Combat Infantry Badge
and the Paratroopers' Badge.
After the war, Brother George settled in Atlanta, Ga. He became a member
of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in 1945 and served as the
church sexton for 12 years. Brother George was initiated into AHEPA in 1972
and attended chapter meetings until two years ago.
The Order does not forget the many sacrifices of its members of the Armed
Forces, past and present.
The Ahepans of Mother Lodge 1 of Atlanta thank Brother George Demas for
his service to our country and were honored to count him as a Brother Ahepan
and friend.
