A Fraternal Greeting from Brother Rear Admiral Byrd
When Greek American E.J.
Demas of Washington, D.C.,
successfully applied to join
Explorer Richard E. Byrd's 1926
expedition to the North Pole as
an airplane mechanic, he took a
small Greek flag with him. Upon
his return, Demas donated the
flag to the AHEPA archives
and became an Ahepan of
Washington Chapter 31.
In addition to joining
Byrd on the 1926 expedition,
Brother Demas accompanied
him on his 1927 Trans-Atlantic
flight and on two expeditions
to Antarctica from 1928-1930
and 1933-1935.
On July 14, 1930, Rear
Admiral Byrd became an
Ahepan and wrote the note
below to his brother Ahepans
on the occasion of the 1931
Supreme Convention.
In an interview, Byrd
would say of Ahepans, " Their
welcomes are so cordial and
sincere that I cannot but
admire them and predict
success for their every undertaking
in this country. In my
tour of the United States and
observations from other fraternities
and organizations,
I have yet to find an equal of
the Ahepans. "
