Greek government officials, and an AHEPA delegation. These
state-of-the-art hospitals in Athens and Thessaloniki are administered
by the Greek health services are among the best in the
country. To this day, they have cared for thousands of persons
for eight decades and are a lasting testament to AHEPA's commitment
to Greece.
In the wake of WWII, the United States slowly started to ease
its strict immigration laws to allow the entry of refugees from
Europe named, " Displaced Persons. " AHEPA joined several other
religious and humanitarian organizations to lobby for a quicker
and more effective admittance of persons in dire need from
countries stricken by the war including Greece. There, a civil
war lasted from 1946 to 1949 and caused additional hardships.
As Congress gradually took step to allow the entry of refugees
AHEPA sought to help the process. The 28th Supreme Convention
held in 1950 in Cleveland, Ohio, authorized and directed the new
Supreme Lodge to help implement the act of Congress to allow
10,000 Greek persons and orphans to enter the United States by
establishing an AHEPA Displaced Persons Board of nine members.
They appropriated $10,000 for its operation. AHEPA was
active in the resettlement of refugees, especially orphans, in the
United States. However, the program proved too challenging and
was prone to abuses, so the Refugee Relief Committee was abolished
in 1956 and replaced by an Immigration and Naturalization
Committee with the responsibility of working with other immigration
groups in seeking more liberalized immigration laws.
AHEPA also offered assistance to persons in need on site
in Greece. In the 1950s, the Daughters of Penelope Karyatides
Chapter of Athens acquired a parcel of land, valued at $10,000
for the purpose of building a " Penelopean Shelter Home " to house
underprivileged girls in Nea Ionia, a suburb northwest of the center
of Athens. Until 1975, the Penelopean granted the disadvantaged
girls an education that some considered similar to a private
American boarding school. With social needs changing, in 1975 it
became a day care center to aid working or incapacitated mothers
who were raising young children with low or no income.
In the post-WWII era, there were several major earthquakes
that struck Greece for which AHEPA and the Daughters of Penelope
immediately mobilized to raise relief funds. Those initiatives
included sending $30,000 in response to the 1953 earthquake

in the Ionian islands and $18,500 in the aftermath of an earthquake
in Thessaly, near the town of Volos. The latter donation went
toward the construction of a " preventorium, " a facility to assist
needy children in the town of Makrinitsa on Mt. Pelion. AHEPA
continued to provide earthquake aid in the decades that followed.
Examples include creating a special fund for earthquake relief
after an earthquake in the Gulf of Corinth in 1981 and AHEPA
was especially active when another earthquake in 1999 struck
Athens injuring 1,600 injured persons and causing $3 to $4.2
billion in damage. AHEPA's contributions to earthquake relief
include funding to the Red Cross that led to the purchase of sonar
detection equipment for trapped persons and an ambulance.
Forest fires have become increasingly frequent over the past
few decades in the Mediterranean basin including the Greek
countryside due to increasingly high summer temperatures
and droughts. Always ready to adapt to new circumstances and
address new types of needs, AHEPA has begun to tackle this issue
as well. After forest fires swept through the Peloponnesos region
in 2007 AHEPA chapters throughout the United States assembled
thousands care packages with items for persons whose houses
had burned down and distributed them with the help of the
AHEPA chapters in Greece. AHEPA also initiated a fund drive
which raised $25,000 in the first four days. AHEPA contacted
the State Department and Congress with a view of finding ways
of securing additional funds for the rebuilding and replacing the
properties and crops the fires destroyed. AHEPA secured the
release of $1.5 million from the U.S. State Department for the
Greek Fire Victims Fund. This was followed with eight tons of
household goods and items being collected and boxed in at the
AHEPA headquarters and shipped to Greece.
AHEPA was quick to respond to the next serious wildfire incident
that occurred in Greece, when 103 persons lost their lives
because of fires in the Attica region and especially the seaside
resort town Mati. In the space of three weeks AHEPA had raised
more than $150,000 to benefit fire victims and continued to call
on its chapters worldwide to take action. And in September of
that year an AHEPA delegation visited Athens and inspected the
affected area of Mati, met with burn victims and with officials to
discuss the best way forward to address those fires and those in
the future.
