years until the resettlement of refugees in
their new homes was completed.
More recently, when Cyprus experienced
a financial crisis in 2012-2013, AHEPA
offered help presenting President of the
Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades with
a $25,000 donation to help feed Cypriot children
in need during his visit to New York City in September 2014.
Even during the pandemic, AHEPA continues to assist the
In between the fires in Peloponnesos in 2007, and in Attica
in 2018, Greece experienced the traumas of a near decade long
financial crisis. AHEPA reacted with both local and international
initiatives. The chapters in Greece raised funds for a variety of
needs in their localities, such as funds for food, heating oil, medical
supplies, and equipment for hospitals. AHEPA's global campaign
to complement the effort of Greece's chapters raised a reported
$150,000 in 2012. Over the next few years, it addressed the public
health crisis in Greece that was exacerbated during the economic
crisis. AHEPA partnered with International Orthodox Christian
Charities (IOCC) to secure 10 shipping containers of medical supplies
for delivery to as many as nine different hospitals all across
Greece. Each shipping container was carrying between $650,000
and $850,000 in medical supplies. And by the end of the crisis, it
had raised $500,000 to feed those in need. To date, AHEPA and
IOCC have teamed-up to secure 13 shipping containers of medical
supplies to various hospitals throughout Greece, providing invaluable
public health assistance to the people of Greece. The most
recent delivery occurred in March 2021.
Another major humanitarian undertaking for AHEPA in the
post-WWII era was offering relief to the people of Cyprus. The
Turkish invasion and occupation of the northern part of the
island in 1974 forced thousands to abandon their homes and
flee to the south, causing the government of Cyprus a major
challenge in dealing with the homeless refugees that were estimated
at about 200,000 and in need of food, medical supplies
and shelter. Among the many Greek and international agencies
offering relief funds was the AHEPA. In October 1974, the AHEPA
Mercy Mission to Cyprus brought 10,000 pounds of relief supplies
that included clothes, canned food, and blankets for the Cypriot
people. The delegation spent time talking to refugees in several
camps around the town of Larnaca and their report of the difficult
conditions the inhabitants were facing galvanized AHEPA and the

Evangelismos Hospital, partnering with funds raised from the
Attica wildfires for a burn sub care unit. AHEPA also donated
$30,000 to the Center for Epidemiology and Outcomes Research
(CLEO), an Athens-based research center, to support the public
health of the people of Greece in response to the coronavirus
pandemic. Finally, AHEPA Cares, the organization's response to
the global pandemic under Supreme President George Horiates,
has provided the people of Greece with vital assistance through
initiatives such as PPE and medical equipment donations and by
donating blood and organizing blood drives.
During its 100-year history AHEPA has amassed an impressive
record of humanitarian assistance to Greece and Cyprus that
have saved lives and improved the lives of thousands of persons.
And more recently, travel to Greece and the existence of AHEPA
chapters in Greece have brought a more direct " boots on the
ground " engagement of its members. Such is AHEPA's reputation
that many outsiders sometimes have exaggerated expectations
of AHEPA's capabilities, forgetting that it is an organization with
diverse goals and responsibilities and not solely a relief organization
and that it also commitment to offering relief in the wake
of natural disasters in the United States and Canada. Moreover,
Greece and Cyprus are developed, complex societies and there
is no simple " silver bullet " answer to solve their needs. Yet for
AHEPA those high expectations are a badge of honor and it has
learned over the years that the most effective way to help Greece
and Cyprus is to offer its own aid but also act as a catalyst that
will effectively coordinate the efforts of the entire Greek diaspora
community and the authorities in Greece and Cyprus.
The 21st century has already produced major challenges to
the modern international humanitarian system and the Eastern
Mediterranean has, and is, experiencing the effects of a health
pandemic, of economic inequality, increased refugee flows and
more frequent weather-related natural disasters. And the threat
of war in the vicinity remains present. AHEPA's one-hundred-year
long commitment to humanitarianism and its ability to adapt to
its changing needs and practices guarantees that it will remain a
major force in the decades ahead of us.
