Free Spanish-language Brochures Help Consumers Make Informed Decisions A Great Resource for Your Referral Partners NHPCO is an outreach partner in the national initiative, Choosing Wisely, launched by the ABIM Foundation and Consumer Reports. The goal is to educate consumers about appropriate health care choices, meaning care that is supported by evidence, not duplicative of other tests or procedures already received, free from harm, and truly necessary. More than 35 medical specialty societies have joined Choosing Wisely and over 17 - including AAHPM and AGS - have unveiled recommendations. Recently added materials include 35 Spanish-language brochures on a number of tests and treatments, from Treating Sleep Problems, Breast Biopsy and Supplements for Osteoarthritis... to Treating Low-risk Prostate Cancer. These resources can be downloaded from the Consumer Reports' website, Consumer Health Choices. View the complete list of brochures now, and share them with your referral partners as well as patients and families. Outreach Tip Sheet and PowerPoint to Help To help with your outreach, see the Choosing Wisely Outreach Tip Sheet and Choosing Wisely Outreach PowerPoint developed by NHPCO. nhPco is also working with consumer Reports on a new brochure to help explain the palliative care and hospice continuum. look for that later in 2014. Survey Speaks to Choosing Wisely's Success In a Consumer Reports survey of 2,669 consumers who received Choosing Wisely information, 72 percent agreed that it had changed their opinion of the topic, taught them new information, or prompted them to ask more questions of their health provider. What's more, 81 percent who reported interest in a Choosing Wisely topic said they were likely to have a conversation with their physician about what they had read. The survey was fielded in December 2012.
