States descended on Ground
Zero coming to the aid of a city
and a country knocked to its
knees," says Alvarez. "Military, law
enforcement, fire departments
and volunteer-based
organizations like the American
Red Cross, volunteered to help.
Today many of these folks, who
have returned to their home
states, have gotten sick from
many of the illnesses associated
with breathing the toxic air of
Ground Zero."

the goal to educate more people
about the 9/11 Victim
Compensation Fund and the
increasing number of 9/11 first
responders entering hospice care.
Lou's Story is part of the My
Hospice campaign - an initiative
to educate policymakers and their
constituents about the value of
the Medicare hospice benefit.

he immediately jumped to action
on 9/11," said NHPCO President
and CEO Edo Banach. "We are
proud to share his hospice story

Families Special Orlando
Experience
As the NHPCO team prepared for
the trip to Orlando, Florida for
the 2019 Interdisciplinary
The magic of the holidays was present at all
the Orlando attractions.
Conference, staff discussed
bringing their children along to
Florida and taking them to the
theme parks. Realizing that many
of the pediatric patients cared for
by hospice and palliative care
providers may never have the
chance to make those childhood
memories, the team decided to
offer grants to those families so
they can also have special family
experiences.
In conjunction with IDC,
fundraising affiliate National
Hospice Foundation partnered
with Give Kids the World Village
to provide a special Orlando
"Magical" experience to three
pediatric hospice or palliative
care patients and their families.
