Veterans
A Message from the
We Honor Veterans Team
It's hard to believe that We Honor Veterans
is entering its tenth year. What started
with Hospice-Veteran Partnerships and the
pilot project "Reaching Out: Quality
Hospice and Palliative Care for Rural and
Homeless Veterans" has now become one
of NHPCO's most successful initiatives.
With 2020 just around the corner, we proudly look back on the pinning
ceremonies, community education events, Vet-to-Vet Volunteers, and
stories shared by our 5,460 hospice and community-based health care
partners from across the nation.
In our eyes perhaps the greatest highlight over the past year was the
beginning of a new era in care for Vietnam-era Veterans - thank you to
the hospice partners, Vietnam Veterans, their families and caregivers who
participated in the Vietnam Veterans focus groups and brought a voice to
the specific needs that are unintentionally yet often overlooked. These
conversations will shape protocols to guide end-of-life care for Vietnam
Veterans and provide a better understanding of their mindset as they
enter hospice care. By identifying meaningful experiences and other needs,
WHV will enter the next phase of implementation of protocols and
dissemination of training expertise on PTSD, Moral Injury, and Suicide
Prevention on a national scale.
Kindred Hospice in Texas, honored Dr. Granville G. Coggs,
a Tuskegee Airman from WWII.
The year ahead will bring growth - not only in the quantity of partners but
in the quality of care they provide and we look forward to new beginnings
