Award Winners
Recognized at MLC
"Leading and Mobilizing Social Change for 40 Years" was the theme of the NHPCO 29th Management
and Leadership Conference held in late March. As part of the events and festivities, six individuals and
organizations were recognized for their contributions to the field.
Galen Miller Leadership Award
This award was created in memory of NHPCO
executive vice president, Galen Miller, PhD, who
died on August 22, 2013. It serves to recognize a
hospice palliative care champion who exhibits the
same dedication and passion for which Dr. Miller
was known.
Gretchen M. Brown, President/CEO
Hospice of the Bluegrass, Lexington, KY
Leading one of the first hospices in the United
States, Brown was able to expand services in a
rural area, making care more accessible to all
residents. Today
Hospice of the
Bluegrass serves
more than 900
patients daily
in 32 central,
southeastern and
northern counties
of Kentucky.
Council of States Trailblazer Award
The Trailblazer Award was created on behalf
of NHPCO's Council of States to recognize state
organizations that expand access to hospice
palliative care, promote quality, and increase
awareness through innovation and leadership.
Florida Hospices and
Palliative Care Association
Through a statewide initiative in 2012, and again
in 2013, Florida Hospices and Palliative Care
Association created a personalized "Advocacy
Notebook" for each of its Congressional members.
The Notebook contained personal letters
from patients, families and hospice staff
in the member's jurisdiction, along with
an introductory letter and supporting
messaging. The initiative not only
reflects innovation and leadership, but
can serve as a model for other states.
