CURRENCIES ICBA urges Treasury to oppose postal banking expansion News In a June 29 letter, ICBA called on the Treasury Department's special task force on postal reform to recommend prohibiting an expansion of banking services at the U.S. Postal Service. The letter follows an ICBA-supported letter to the Treasury from House Financial Services Committee vice chairman Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.). He noted that in 2006, Congress barred the USPS from offering new, non-postal services. ICBA's letter says financial services are best provided in a competitive, private and free marketplace so they can openly and efficiently benefit customers. It also cites the USPS's $5.6 billion net loss in fiscal year 2016, $121 billion in unfunded liabilities and a 2014 data breach that affected nearly 1 million customers. " The Postal Service's inability to manage its own primary business of selling postage and delivering mail suggests it is ill-equipped to handle any banking function, " ICBA president and CEO Rebeca Romero Rainey wrote.
