Rising to the challenge
Staff at the Adirondack Trust Co. in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., are reaching
new heights in the fight against addiction in upstate New York.
The $1.1 billion-asset, 13-branch community bank is the lead sponsor of
Saratoga Hospital's Above and Beyond Challenge, which raises awareness of
and funds for the Addiction Medicine Program at the hospital's Community
Health Center. As part of the program, teams of community members and
employees of local businesses go on free, volunteer-led journeys through the
area's picturesque peaks-from the 46 High Peaks to the Saranac Six Peaks-to
generate support for the cause.

Stephan von Schenk, Adirondack Trust Co.'s president and CEO and an active
outdoorsman, is credited as the initiative's brainchild. He says the community
bank's team has raised nearly $70,000 and gone on about 40 hikes since the
Above and Beyond Challenge launched in June.
Von Schenk posted on the bank's Instagram recently, " Summiting these peaks
reminded me a little about the road to recovery ... there is nothing easy about
the journey, but the payoff is GLORIOUS! "

Large community banks gather for D.C. symposium
Events
ICBA members from community banks with assets of $1 billion or more met last
month in Washington, D.C., for the Breaking Barriers Symposium, an exclusive
networking event featuring panels and talks with industry experts.
ICBA president and CEO Rebeca Romero Rainey kicked off the Nov. 29-30 symposium.
Joining her were Karen Thomas, ICBA senior executive vice president of government relations
and public policy, and Paul Merski, ICBA group executive vice president, congressional relations
and strategy, who updated invitees on their work in the political arena.
During the symposium, a panel of ICBA members discussed human capital, while meetings
with vendor partners covered merged bank culture, insufficient liquidity among
community banks and competing in a digital world.
Professional coach Chris Tomassian of Excella Consulting closed the day with
a talk on the methodology behind the " agile mindset " of achieving goals in the
modern workplace.
