The Leech Lake destination of Walker,
which is located on the edge of one of the
state's most prominent fi shing lakes, caters
to both golfers and outdoors lovers.
Tianna Country Club and Longbow Golf
Club provide golf visitors with a couple of
distinct challenges.
Walker has the Crafters and Artists Mart,
and more than two dozen specialty shops
purvey unusual gifts and merchandise.
On the southwest shore of Leech Lake,
the town hosts Walker Bay Days. The twoday
mid-August confab has music, food,
games, tourneys, bingo and a Teen Tent.
There's also a traditional Pow Wow.
A day in Blackduck isn't complete without
getting a photo at the duck statue.
That's free, and so is the annual Blackduck
Woodcarvers Festival, held the last
Saturday in July, and a Bluegrass Festival
in September.
Some courses on this tour are part of
The Minnesota Golf Trail. This entire golf
assemblage is a neat thread that leads to
Itasca State Park, home of the headwaters

Stands of Norway pine embellish the
lake setting at the home of the revered
Birchmont Tournament.
BLACKDUCK MUNICIPAL GOLF CLUB
Nine holes with rental clubs available.
BLUEBERRY PINES GOLF CLUB
Located on the edge of the Chippewa National
Forest, it has an elegant northwoods feeling.
EAGLE VIEW GOLF COURSE
A great family course with green fees under
$20 for 18 holes, par 63
FAIR HAVENS GOLF CLUB
Fair Havens's character comes from the towering
Norway pines that surround the course,
with a longish front nine and a back nine
fi lled with rolling hills and mounds.
HEADWATERS GOLF CLUB
Players can sharpen their skills on two practice
putting greens.
LONGBOW GOLF CLUB
Set in a verdant forest on Leech Lake's shore,
Longbow was conceived by former PGA Pro
Mike Morely and Daniel J. Heibling.
Eagle View Golf Course
TIANNA COUNTRY CLUB
Course visionary John Andrus's three-year-old son
Steve had trouble pronouncing his name and introduced
himself as " Ti-Anna " -which became
the name of the 2007 MGA Club of the Year.

LAKE COUNTRY SCENIC BYWAY
The Lake Country Scenic Byway envelops this area. The Explore

ITASCA STATE PARK
The headwaters of the Mississippi River are so shallow
here that you can wade across. The park is also home
to some of the state's tallest red and white pines, which
can be viewed along the scenic 17-mile Wilderness
Drive. You can also rent a canoe, kayak or pontoon
or take a two-hour narrated cruise on Lake
Itasca. There's a charming gift shop and an overnight
option at historic Douglas Lodge or cabins.
» The " International "
Bemidji Town & Country Club has hosted the
Birchmont " International " since 1926, when
the inaugural match play tournament was won
by Minnesota Golf Hall of Famer Harry Legg.
Over the years, many of Minnesota's fi nest
golfers have collected the title, including the
likes of Phil Olson, Bev Gammon, Joan Garvin
and Bill Israelson. Eric Lilleboe, of Okemos,
Mich., and Rachel Roller, of Grand Forks, N.D.,
are the respective men's and women's 2010
champs. Stroke-play qualifying for this year's
87th Annual Birchmont starts July 25. The
match play fi nals are scheduled for Saturday,
