Some people say that dreams are a window
into our subconscious-a view, albeit
at times surreal and inexplicable, of
our innermost thoughts, fears and desires.
Others, such as Charles Dickens, through
his fi ctional character Ebenezer Scrooge,
contend that nightmares may be the result
of eating " an underdone potato. " But
ask a golfer what visions disturb their
REM sleep in the middle of a dark, winter
night and you may fi nd there is nothing
underdone about it. For some golfers,
the anxiety over missed putts, tight drives
and unfulfi lled expectations is tormenting
these souls in very real, overwrought,
recurring golf nightmares.
" I'm in a tiny room, like a closet, four
feet across, and my club gets stuck and
it hits something, the wall or ceiling. I
can't take the club back, " says Chuck Lundeen,
who was talking about golf nightmares
with the rest of his foursome in the
clubhouse of Pebble Lake in Fergus Falls
after a November round. " Maybe it's the
kind of deal where I have a long swing,
so [the dream is] telling me to shorten it
up a bit. "
Perhaps it was because the golf
season stretched beyond Halloween this
past year, but three members of Lundeen's
foursome also admitted to having recurring
golf nightmares.
In fact, they are not alone. Bob Oberle
(brother of the author of this article) is
a longtime member of Le Sueur Country
Club, where he has played countless
times-but that doesn't keep his perception
of it from changing in his sleep.
" I come up to the fi rst tee and the hole
confi guration has changed, " he says. " The
normal driving path on the fi rst hole is all
messed up and shrunk down, near nothing-to
the point where you don't have
any idea where to hit the ball. Every time I
have the dream there's all these trees and I
know the fairway is on the other side, but
there is just no place to hit. I guess that
would be kind of an anxiety dream. "
Oberle has another recurring golf
dream in which he imagines that on the
outskirts of his course is another nine
holes that don't actually exist. He recognizes
the fi rst hole as a par four and can
see two more holes off in the distance of
a fuzzy dreamscape. He wakes up wishing
the holes were real but realizing they're
not.
Oberle shares that recurring nightmare
with a member of his regular group, Doug
Nelson. Nelson has golf dreams too-but
his, he says, aren't nightmares at all.
" I dream that a second 18 holes lies just
south of the course, " Nelson says. " A small
trail leads back to an 18-hole course that
is immaculate because no one seems to
know about it. It's green and wooded like
Augusta National or something.
" It's a recurring dream, and I don't
think I have ever gotten through all the
holes, " Nelson adds. " But it's very relaxing.
Maybe this is an alternate reality of
where the course should have been or
some future expansion. I have never gone
over there, but I look that way through the
woods from the course. "
Sharing similar golf nightmares with
other golfers is not uncommon. W.P.
Ryan, the MGA communications director
and editor of this magazine, was playing a
round of golf at Southview Country Club
this summer when he met a kindred, if
not tortured, spirit.
" Southview has a tee that's about four
" I come up to the first tee and the hole
configuration has changed. The normal
driving path on the first hole is all messed
up and shrunk down. " - Bob Oberle
feet high, about three steps wide and four
steps deep, " Ryan says. " It's a small tee,
and when you are up there with a foursome
and one guy is trying to tee off, it
seems downright crowded. It reminded
me-and not in a good way-of a recurring
golf nightmare.
" I am always playing with somebody
famous and everybody tees off but me,
because I can't pull the trigger, " he says.
" I can't get the ball on its tee, or I can't
settle into a comfortable stance, or once
I take a stance, there's no room to take a
backswing. I stand there completely fl ummoxed
and watch, frustrated, as the threesome
disappears down the fairway. "
Ryan mentioned that dream at Southview
and found out that he's not alone.
" Another member of my foursome said
he has a similar golf nightmare, " he says.
Golfers spend a lot of time thinking
about the game of golf, so it doesn't seem
extraordinary that golf would also invade
their subconscious.
One golfer dreams of hitting a pure
drive that only carries 120 yards. Another,
David Johnson, describes his nightmare
this way: " I'm trying to tee up my drive,
the tee is uneven, with bare spots, it's a
200-plus yards forced carry, shrubs with
