member clubs are recognized in a
noteworthy manner. The Wilderness
at Fortune Bay, a Jeff Brauer design,
broke into the top 10 (No. 9) of Golfweek
magazine's " Best Casino Courses, "
while The Meadows at Mystic
Lake, a Garret Gill/Paul Miller layout,
claimed the No. 12 spot of the same
list. Another of Brauer's local designs,
The Quarry at Giants Ridge's 13th
hole, made Golf Digest/Golfworld's 18
" Most Fun Holes. "
Fay's Farewell to
the USGA
David B. Fay, the USGA's
long-time executive director,
announced his
retirement on December
24, 2010. Fay's tenure at the
USGA spanned 32 years, a period of
explosive growth in the game's popularity,
as well as signifi cant changes in
golf administration. Mike Butz, USGA
deputy executive director since 1995,
was named acting executive director
pending the outcome of a national
search. Fay, 60, joined the USGA in
1978 and spent the last 21 years as the
sixth executive director of the USGA.
The Golf Season Just
Got Longer
For decades, Minnesota's
" offi cial "
golf season (the active score-posting
period for handicap purposes) lasted
from April 15 to October 15. The
MGA has added four weeks to the
newly extended score-posting season,
now extending from April 1 to
October 31, in a move that was approved
by the MGA board of directors
at the association's annual meeting,
November 1, 2010.
" Our goal has been to have golfers
post as many scores as possible for
handicap purposes, " says Tom Ryan,
MGA executive director. " Since the
modern golf course superintendent
has improved golf course conditioning

was logical to extend Minnesota's score-posting
season. "
Golfer rounds played from April 1 through
October 31 are now required to be posted to
the golfer's handicap record.
