Seth Raynor
An engineer-turned-golf-course-architect,
Seth Raynor, a protégé of C.B. Macdonald,
beat out the venerable Donald
Ross for the University Golf Club design
job in 1920. Raynor's fee, negotiated
downward to $1,500, included delivery
of a model presented to the club on June
1 of that year. Raynor spoke very highly
of the terrain upon which Midland was to
be laid out. Construction of the greens
and greenside bunkers commenced that
fall, and the new University Golf Club
course opened for play in July 1921.
