coaches recognize that. They walk with
their teams, not so much for scoring, but
to put a presence there, which suggests
that they are concerned with somebody
manipulating or taking advantage of a
younger player. "
While Westmoreland acknowledges
the inherent difficulty in having uniform
rule compliance in a game that is
based on self-policing, he still believes
the game's very nature is its saving grace.
He cites a recent example of a player
trying to get through professional qualifying
school who called a penalty on
himself, thereby losing that opportunity.
Only a person with an appreciation for
the game would do such a thing. " I think
there are enough of those stories in golf
that a young player can look at it say,
'Yeah, that is the way to do it,' " he says.
In his recent book, A Game for Life-
Golf's Rules & Research, Westmoreland
says the Rules can foster more appreciation
for the game: " I love teaching the
Rules of Golf and sincerely believe that
every golfer who makes an effort to learn
the Rules will enjoy the game just a little
more and gain respect for golf's culture,
history and traditions at the same time. "
As a golf rules instructor, Westmoreland
believes that educating players about
the Rules is the best way to decrease the
amount of cheating that goes on in the
game. Sachau agrees.
" Technically speaking, this increases
adherence to the rules rather than decreasing
cheating, but it will help limit
rule infractions, " Sachau says. " Make
people, especially the cheaters, aware
that most people do not cheat. This
should eliminate the motive, or in some
cases, the rationalization for cheating. "
Sachau says that if people understand
the basis for a rule, they are more apt to
follow it. Westmoreland agrees that getting
back to the basics in golf rules could
provide a better understanding of them.
" Understanding the Three Principles
and understanding [how they apply]-
hey, I think you could play that way, " he
says. " You could play without the rest of
the rules as long as people understood
what is fair. "
So that means, play the course as you
find it; play the ball as it lies; and when
you can't do those, play fair.
Or, in the larger sense, take the world
(the course) as it comes, deal with situations
you've created (your lie) honestly,
and if you can't do either, find a fair and
equitable solution for all (the field).
