Mayfl ower Country Club Upper Sioux Agency State Park In 2012, Minnesota marked the 150th anniversary of the darkest episode in state history: the Dakota War of 1862. Sparked by broken promises in the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux, the war's epicenter was the Minnesota River Valley. The Upper Sioux Agency State Park's 1,000-plus acres near Granite Falls preserve the memory of the Yellow Medicine Agency, which was destroyed in the 1862 confl ict. Interpretive signage at the site explains the history. The park offers unique camping opportunities in three Native American tipis that sleep up to six. Among other curiosities in the park, the Yellow Medicine River Cliff was carved by ancient glacial drift. The cliff above the rocky bluff overlooks the river and a vast landscape of grasslands, wetlands and the area where the forest transitions to prairie. Entrance into Minnesota State Parks requires a $5 vehicle permit. -C.L.
