Why can't I post scores made while playing alone?
A Several updates to the USGA Handicap System were introduced
Jan. 1, 2016, and one signifi cant change is the utilization of " peer review "
in determining acceptable scores to post for handicap purposes.
The USGA defi nes peer review as the ability of players to gain an understanding
of a player's potential ability and to form a reasonable basis
for supporting or disputing a score that has been posted; it's a key component of the USGA
Handicap System and essential to its success at the club level. Although not a new concept (this
application of peer review is common practice in other parts of the world), this change allows
peer review to more effectively take place by having scores attested by at least one other person-whether
it's a caddie, fellow competitor, or friend riding along in a cart. In other words,
scores made while playing alone do not satisfy peer review, and will no longer be acceptable for
score posting.

In the previous issue of Minnesota Golfer, we asked: Which former Gopher
golfer won his lone state public links title with two pars in a six-way suddendeath
playoff at Keller Golf Course?
Gary Stimmler, of Fridley, was one of a half-dozen readers who responded
Bill Homeyer
with the correct answer: Bill Homeyer. Not yet out of high school (Washburn), Homeyer won
a six-way playoff at Keller Golf Course for the 1966 Minnesota State Public Links title. The
gangsome, the largest in state history, was tied at 147 (3-over par). The event was shortened to
36 holes due to wet conditions. After a sky drive, Homeyer hit his wedge to 10 feet and made a
winning par-putt on the second playoff hole. He made a 4-foot birdie putt to get in the playoff,
while Bob Lucas held a two-shot lead after 33 holes but bogeyed two of the last three to force a
