Happy Feet
The golf shoe market continues to evolve. Here's what to know
about the latest shoe tech.

ith my cracked and worn golf shoes on their last,
umm, legs, I limped to the fi nish of last season.
When there was a golf show sale at a local pro
shop, I pounced-buying another pair of the same shoes I was
wearing. But back on the course, I noticed golfers sporting different,
unfamiliar styles of shoes and immediately had buyer's
remorse. Apparently the evolution of golf shoes happened while
I kept stubbornly lacing up my traditional saddle shoes. Clearly,
there was much for me to learn about today's golf shoes.
So Long, Spikes
A bit of research revealed that many new golf shoes don't even
look like golf shoes anymore (the NIKE Lunar VaporStorm, for
instance)-and the soles, where the rubber meets the grass, are
completely revolutionary.
Shoes have indeed changed since the days of metal spikes,
but they took a quantum leap in 2010 when ECCO shoes-and
endorser Fred Couples-introduced the spikeless, or hybrid,
shoe at the Masters in Augusta, Ga. And ever since, companies
have been tinkering and cobbling together new ideas to offer
golfers support, traction and comfort (while also giving the
greenskeepers a break on their putting surfaces).
" Cleated shoes have six-to-eight spikes per shoe, and these

spikes create pressure points on the bottom of the foot, " says
David Helter, sales director for ECCO Sport. " A hybrid shoe has
hundreds of small nubs on the bottom of the shoes, which disperse
the golfer's weight equally across the bottom of the foot
and are therefore more comfortable. "
It appears everyone wants comfort these days: All of the
top manufacturers have spikeless shoes, which now make up
50 percent of the golf shoe market, according to Clint Roepke,
PGA golf professional at Golf Galaxy in Roseville.
Options for Uppers
After settling on your sole preference, the next question is: What
do you want in the upper part of the shoe? There is the leather
upper that FootJoy, NIKE, adidas and other big name brands
