RULES PRIMER
New Rules Preview
A deeper dive into three proposed changes coming next year.
T
he new Rules are coming. At the start of the 2019 golf
season, vast changes to the centuries-old Rules of Golf
will go into effect. The changes, which were proposed
(and are being examined) by the USGA and the R&A, golf's
governing bodies, will be great for the game-especially for
amateur players out there.
While Minnesota Golfer announced the Rules changes in a
past issue (Spring 2017), we want to take this year to drill down
a little deeper into the changes and offer a closer look at just
what to expect.
The Rules included are in the draft stage (subject to change),
and will be published later this year. Feel free to offer your own

NEW RULE
7.1a
Player May Take Reasonable Actions to
Find Ball
The player is responsible for fi nding his or her ball in play after
every stroke. The player may fairly search for the ball by taking
reasonable actions to fi nd and identify it, such as:
* Moving sand and water,
* Moving or bending grass, bushes, tree branches and other
growing or attached natural objects, and
* Breaking such objects (but not if the player deliberately
breaks such objects).
If doing these things improves the conditions affecting the
stroke:
* There is no penalty under Rule 8.1 if the improvement
results from a fair search, but
* If the improvement results from actions that exceeded
what was reasonably necessary for a fair search, the player
gets the general penalty for breach of Rule 8.1 (two strokes).

What's Changed
The Rules governing what a player can " reasonably " do
during a search for the ball have relaxed. Additionally,
the time allowed to perform a reasonable search has been
reduced from fi ve minutes to three minutes, after which
the ball becomes " lost. "
What It Means
If you are intently and earnestly looking for your golf ball and
inadvertently change the condition of the course in a way that
improves your lie, you won't be penalized. (However, there is
a penalty if a player searches in an " unreasonable way " that
improves the conditions affecting the next stroke.)
