Ball Hits Attended or Removed
Flagstick or Person Attending It
(1) Ball Accidently Hits Attendant or Flagstick.
If the player's ball in motion after a stroke accidently
hits an attended or removed fl agstick or the
person attending it:
* There is no penalty, and
* The ball must be played as it lies.
What's Changed
The biggest change is there is no penalty
for a ball in motion on the green
accidentally hitting something (see
exception 2, Rule 11.1). The current
Rule calls for a one- or two-stroke
penalty depending on the breach.
The change is related to Rule 13.2a
which reads in part: " Before playing
a ball, the player may leave the fl agstick
in the hole, remove it or have it
attended. "
What It Means
This may eliminate the dance each
foursome does regarding fl agstick
etiquette. In addition, for all you
solo players pacing across a large
green, the Rule change saves the
time of pulling the fl agstick and
walking back to your ball to putt
it. (All of you currently pull that
fl ag before putting on your solo
6:30 a.m. rounds, right?)
RULES GLOSSARY
FLAGSTICK
A movable pole (usually
with a fl ag attached) that
is placed in the hole to
show where the hole is.
LOST BALL
A ball that is not found
within three minutes after
the player (or the player's
caddie or partner) begins
to search for it.

How Ball Must Be Dropped
When dropping a ball in a relief area under a Rule,
the player must:
* Hold the ball above the ground without it
touching any growing thing or other natural
or artifi cial object, and
* Let go of the ball so that it falls through the air
(at least two inches) before coming to rest.
What's Changed
A golfer is no longer required to
do the outstretched arm drop from
shoulder height. The Rules actually
recommend the ball be dropped at
least two inches above the ground
or other object.
What It Means
While you can't place the ball when
you are dropping it, the Rule lets
you come pretty darn close to it.
Additionally, grabbing a ball from
your pocket and dropping it in
disgust over your previous shot is
perfectly legal (and far too likely,
it seems).
Note: Time spent playing a
wrong ball does not count
toward the three-minute
period.
RELIEF AREA
The area in which a player
must drop and play a ball
when taking relief under
a Rule. Each relief Rule requires
the player to use a
specifi c relief area whose
size and location are
based on several factors:
