The people at North Oaks Golf
Club recognize the value of a nice
clubhouse patio to their members,
as the club is currently renovating
and expanding their 1991 clubhouse
building. When fi nished (by
Memorial weekend), the clubhouse
will include a formal dining " Wine
Room, " a larger bar and grill, and
a third restaurant space designed
for families. The patio itself, whose
increased size doubles the seating
capacity, expands toward the
course and creates a stadium-like
feel around the bowl that the 18th
green sits in. " We're trying to take
advantage of what we think is the
best clubhouse view in the Twin
Cities, " says Phil Anderson, general
manager for North Oaks GC.
While each private club varies
in size and style, the common
denominator is what happens after
each round is played: those memories,
laughs, and friends made for
life at the 19th hole.

No Hope for Bob
The story goes like this: In the early 1990s, Bob Hope's manager (or agent) called a venerable St. Paul
private club and told them that Bob Hope wanted a tee time as he was coming in for a function. Hope
had played the course several times, presumably with a prominent member. One day he was in town,
though, and that member was not.
So, when a junior employee at the pro shop answered the call, without thinking about it he answered,
" No. If Mr. Hope wants to reach out to a member that will have him as their guest, he is welcome to do
that. Otherwise, we are a private country club for members only. "
The club later called back offering a member host-but it was too late. In the aftermath, some members
were not pleased about the decision to not immediately call a member to host Mr. Hope.
