Exploring the Emerald Isle

And the best courses are not cheap:
We paid $523.37 for two green fees at
County Down. However, having paid
$475 apiece at Pebble Beach a few years
ago, it seemed reasonable fare to play the
course Golf Digest recently crowned as
the top golf course in the world.
If you're renting a car, insurance is a
must: Roads in Ireland are narrower
than you can imagine. And if you're a
fi rst-timer at driving on the left side
of the road and manage to not graze a
hedge, parked car, sheep or bicyclist,
then you've had beginner's luck.
Maps are of limited value when you
drive through a town with no clearly
marked street signs, or come to a roundabout
with fi ve different options. More
useful is a GPS system that tells you
which turns to take and reports how long
it will take to reach your destination.
PLAYING THE CROWN JEWELS
After two exceptionally fun days in
Dublin, we made the three-hour drive
north to Royal County Down in
Newcastle, Northern Ireland. There's
not a great deal of elevation change at
County Down, but enough to provide
soul-stirring views of the adjacent Irish
Sea to the east and the shadowy mountains
of Mourne looming over the course
to the south.
Our caddy was extraordinarily helpful
in guiding our tee shots on the proper
line. However, even his sage advice could
not keep some of our shots out of the
ruthlessly penal bunkers. On the short
par-3 seventh, a tee shot that looked like
it might hold the left side of the green
instead rolled sideways into a bunker,
requiring four shots to escape a gaping
lip curling over the ball like a breaking
10-foot wave.
The tightly mown fairways allow
errant shots to run amok into the thick
heather and gorse lining most of the

holes or through the deceptively fl at
greens, or leave delicate pitch shots over
swales or bunkers. These aren't shots we
often play in the States, but they're a big
part of the fun on the Emerald Isle.
The other plum in Northern Island is
Royal Portrush, sidling up against the
North Atlantic and adjacent to a resort
town that seems to be too northerly
to draw vacationers to its beaches. Yet
the vacationers come, as do the golfers:
90 percent of the daily tee sheet at
Portrush is made up of foreign players,
most of those from the United States.
