longtime general manager, fi rst
fl oated the idea of championship
golf to his bosses in the 1960s.
Nearly two decades passed before
he persuaded the board of
directors that the time was ripe
for Grand View to enter the golf resort business. The
Pines at Grand View Lodge opened in 1990, an 18-hole
championship course designed by Joel Goldstrand.
Eventually, The Pines would add nine additional holes, and
the resort would acquire an 18-hole golf course in nearby
Pequot Lakes (The Preserve). As the game's popularity
blossomed in the 1990s, Brainerd would become a
nationally recognized golf tourist destination.
