are two core
principles of the
game.
hoever coined the adage, " golf
doesn't build character, it reveals
it, " must have had Patrick Reed,
aka Captain America, in mind when his
counsel recently fired a letter to Brandel
Chamblee of the Golf Channel to cease and
desist talk of cheating regarding the former's
rules gaff at the Hero World Challenge in
December. For those who don't know, Reed's
ball sat in a cuppy lie in a waste area beside
the green. He took two practice swings
removing sand from the back of the ball
each time. After his round, Reed was shown
the video of the incident and the PGA Tour
rules official added two strokes to Reed's
scorecard, which is the general penalty for
a breach of Rule 8.1: Course Played as It Is
Found.
'Play the course as you find it' and 'play
your ball as it lies' are two core principles of
the game, and they represent the steel rebar
of the larger Rules of Golf, wrote Richard S.
Tufts, more than a half century ago in his
guide, " The Principles Behind the Rules of
Golf. "
Thomas Friedman, the New York Times
columnist and former caddie who once
looped for Chi Chi Rodriguez at the 1970
U.S. Open at Hazeltine, likes to relate a story
told to him by another more famous caddie,
Bruce Edwards. Edwards looped for Hall of
Famers Tom Watson and Greg Norman. He
was on Watson's bag throughout the 1970s
and 80s when the Missourian was at his
peak, winning eight majors and leading the
money list five times. He left for a few years
to work for Norman, himself a winner of two
British Opens and the Tour's 1995 Player of
the Year, but Edwards returned to Watson's
bag in 1992. He was diagnosed with ALS in
2003 and passed away the following year.
Edwards said the difference in the two
men's characters was in their approach to
adversity. When Norman hit into a fairway
divot, he complained bitterly to Edwards
about the unfairness of his lot. Conversely,
when Watson found his ball in a similar lie,
he challenged Edwards, saying, " Watch me
hit this shot. "
Authentic or not, this parable on character
rings true. Golfers have their character
tested on the course all of the time. Whether
confronted by a divot in the fairway or some
other unlucky situation, our inner Jekyll and
Hyde stirs. Whether it's nature or nurture,
Norman or Watson, we meet the challenge,
or we whiff.
Like Nathaniel Hawthorne's " The Scarlet
Letter, " there is a certain word that attaches
to the competitor who demonstrates a lack
of character. No golfer wants that stigma
attached to his or her legacy.
