Minnesota Golfer - Fall 2010 - 27

mont Banff Springs Golf Course (1928),
in the shadow of the famous Fairmont
Banff Springs Hotel, a.k.a. the Castle in the
Rockies. The mountains of Banff National
Park drape beauty around every hole. The
Bow River, a greenish blue torrent of glacial
runoff, rolls past seven holes-none
prettier than the 440-yard, par-4 14th that
leads back toward the iconic hotel rising
out of the tree-fi lled mountainside.
One of Thompson's most famous-or
infamous-holes is the beguiling 192yard,
par-3 No. 4 known as the Devil's
Cauldron. A downhill shot to a severely
sloped green surrounded by six bunkers is
all carry over water with a rock-fi lled bottom
resembling a bubbling cauldron-a
stray shot here may indeed " double, double
[your] toil and trouble. "
PLAY MORE IN CANMORE
The alpine village of Canmore, about halfway
between Banff and Kananaskis Village
as the crow fl ies, features three more tracks
that should make your itinerary. Canmore
Golf and Curling Club offers relaxing golf
with a friendly atmosphere in another
valley along the surging Bow River. This
semi-private built in 1926 features mature
trees encroaching on most fairways, making
accurate tee shots a key to success.
Silvertip Resort and Stewart Creek are
both mountain courses with distinct characteristics.
Where Stewart Creek (built
in 2000) weaves seamlessly through the
mountain contours with wide open fairways
that elk and mountain sheep enjoy
strolling on, Silvertip is literally carved out
of the mountainside and offers a dramatically
different look on every hole.
At Silvertip (1999), each tee presents an
exciting challenge. A cart is essential, as
the hikes between some holes are lengthy
and the inclines truly mountainous-but
there's a payoff vista around every turn.
Target golf at its most exhilarating, the
canyon shots resemble Michigan's Treetops
Resort-but in the Rockies.
Silvertip will have
you rethinking your strategy often before
teeing off, and after putting out on the severely
downhill and doglegged 18th, you'll
want to try it again, convinced you know a
better approach.
No. 9 at Stewart Creek requires a second
shot that drops 125 feet off the edge
of a cliff. Once you're safely on, watching
your partners' approach shots is as much
fun as taking your own. On 14, a drivable
294-yard downhill par 4 with trouble all
around (and an abandoned mine shaft entrance
off the fairway), your group will debate
the merits and dangers of this classic
risk/reward hole. The only way to fi gure
out the better approach is to go for it.
That's sage advice for those considering
a golf trip to the Canadian Rockies, which
is possible May through October. Go for
top tier, dramatic golf, incredible mountain
vistas and continual wildlife viewing-and
you'll fi nd one peak experience
after another.
