MGA tournament offi cials measured drives (tee shots) at Dacotah Ridge's No.
3, a 561-yard par 5, and the course's No. 1 handicap hole. This hole ranked
the third easiest with a scoring average of 5.024. Am champ Tom Hoge hit the
fairway in the fi rst two rounds, averaged 303.5 yards and scored a 5 and 3,
respectively.

feet from the hole. So the pressure was on Constable. Basically,
he needed an eagle.
" I didn't have any choice, " Constable says. " I knew Tom was
going to make a birdie from where he was so I had to make an
eagle. I hit the shot (a 6-iron from 198 yards) exactly the way I
wanted to, and I thought it was perfect. But I was expecting the
wind to blow it in from the left, and that didn't happen. Because
of that, the shot was about one yard from being perfect. "
Instead of being on the green, putting for eagle, Constable was
in the hazard. It was another chop-out, and it left him with a
25-foot birdie putt over a sloping ridge. He needed that putt to
tie, but it didn't fall.
Hoge, who had hit his fi rst putt to four feet, missed his birdie
putt from there. Otherwise, he would have broken the scoring
record by two strokes.
" He would have made that putt if he'd needed it [to win], "
Constable says. " I'll guarantee that. I played with him all three
days this week, and I've seen him play before, and he never misses
a putt when it really matters. "
( Course Characteristics
The southwestern prairie/links-style course, located just outside of Morton, was designed
by Rees Jones and opened in 2000. Water from the Wabash Creek runs through
the 240-acre golf course, touching eight holes. A 14-acre man-made lake also comes
into play on fi ve holes. The course features 42 sand bunkers.
Tees, fairways and greens: Bentgrass (L-93 bent on the greens)
Primary rough: Bluegrass and fescue
Secondary rough: Fescues, blue stem and native prairie grasses
