appears ripe for the picking.
The 227-yard par 3 last
surrendered an ace in 1987-until this
spring, when two more were recorded.
Asked for an explanation, pro Michael
Renner says, " I have no idea! "
His bewilderment is justifi ed. From an elevated tee, the hole
plays into a prevailing wind and is guarded along the left by
the Embarrass River and on the front right by a bunker. The
green slopes gently from back to front and right to left. Renner
says many players hit driver.
" I would hit a two iron as hard as I can, " he says. " I hit a draw
at the bunker and hopefully sweep it onto the green. You are
fi ne with a bogey here, and par is a bonus. " -J.O.

par 5, " the green light
goes on for thoughts of reaching
in two. But it's actually the caution light
that should be blinking at Dwan's 12th hole,
where trouble awaits on every shot.
This dogleg-right hole with a huge bunker
about 245 yards out offers little landing room with
a large grove of trees left.
" It's an unnerving drive because you are looking at the big
bunker right and a bunch of big pine trees on the left, " says
pro Rick Sitek.
If you clear the bunker, a small pond just past it hides from
view on the tee. If you're dry, the second shot is even more
challenging-220 yards uphill into the wind to a green guarded
by bunkers.
