From the beginning, golf has been seen as an elitist game for the privileged and very
talented. If you think that attitude still permeates the game, you need to look again.
s a member of the local golf media, I was invited to preview
the White Bear Yacht Club in Dellwood, site of the
2011 MGA Amateur Championship (see page 34). Driving
to the course, I was a little nervous. My hair was overdue for a trim
and my cracked golf shoes needed a shine. I reached the posh clubhouse
of this exclusive club on the banks of White Bear Lake, with
busy tennis courts and large boats docked nearby, and I looked for
a spot in the back of the lot so that I could park the rusted grill of
my car out of sight.

It was slightly unnerving to make my fi rst trip to a course where
the president is known as the Commodore (it was a yacht club before
a golf club) and where F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda
were once asked to leave for making an " unholy rumpus both day
and night. " I half expected to see a Thurston Howell III-type peering
at me over a tropical drink as I lugged my clubs to the golf shop.
I was already feeling a little out of place in this environment, and
when I saw the perfectly manicured fairways of the course, I was
convinced my game would suffer a similar fate.
