A
s the 2011 golf season draws to a
close, preparations for the MGA's
annual meeting and awards banquet
are well underway. At the annual meeting,
committees meet, the formal business
of the MGA is conducted and new
offi cers and directors are elected. At the
awards banquet, we recognize our champions
and volunteers, honor our Players of
the Year and generally celebrate amateur
golf in Minnesota.
And none of this would happen without
you.
When you join your club or league each
season, you are also joining the MGA as
an associate member. Your participation
in the MGA associate member program
is what enables all the programs, services
and events we run throughout the year.
You may see this as a " handicap fee " as
part of your club dues, and your USGA/
GHIN Handicap Index is certainly an

You support not
only our championship program, which
is second to none, but also our Senior
Tour, the largest program of its kind in the
country, and our associate member days,
which provide opportunities for members
to play at some of the best private courses

which keeps us in touch with legislative
activities that affect golfers and golf
courses. You support turf research and
junior golf programs such as First Tee and
The Fairway Foundation, among others.
And of course,

MGA, there is no MGA. You directly
impact the game of golf in Minnesota.

mistake-your membership is supporting
much more than your handicap fee.
You support the MGA mission to promote
the game and its values for all golfers
in Minnesota.
We do that through our website
(mngolf.org) and the Minnesota Golfer
magazine. We do it through our fi nancial
and administrative support of our allied
associations, including the Minnesota
Public Golf Association, the Minnesota
Women's Golf Association, the Minnesota
Women's Public Golf Association, the
Minnesota Section of the PGA and others.

you support the
most visible member
benefi t of all,
the USGA/GHIN
Handicap Index,
and the administrative
side of the USGA Handicap System
that provides the daily customer service
support to your golf professional and
handicap chairs.
In short, without you and your membership
in the MGA, there is no MGA.
You directly impact the game of golf in
Minnesota and our ability to provide the
myriad programs and services we do.
So as we come to the end of another
great golf season, it's fi tting for us to say
" Thank You " for your support of the MGA
and for your support of the game-and to
remind you that golf is better in Minnesota
because of you.

Gophers hire new
coaching staff
In an August 10 press release, Joel
Maturi, director of athletics for the
University of Minnesota, announced
the hiring of two new golf coaches:
Michele Redmond, the head women's
golf coach; and John Carlson, the new
men's golf coach.
Redmond is a 20-year veteran on
the LPGA Tour (she has two wins
and $5,772,081 in earnings) who had
a distinguished golf career at Indiana
University. She was a four-time
All-Big Ten selection and a two-time
All-American. She competed in three
NCAA championships.
Carlson gets the nod as the men's
coach after one season as associate head
coach under John Harris. He played at
the University of Wisconsin, winning
three times, and won 14 times as a professional,
including consecutive Tapemark
Pro-Ams. Carlson is a former
MGA Players' (match play) champion
and a member of the victorious Minnesota
men's team at the 2001 USGA
Men's State Team Championship.
Tyler Stith, a former assistant
head coach at the University of Iowa,
will serve as an assistant coach under
Carlson.
