fi rst-place trophy. " The heat was really oppressive, "
he said. " I think it wore a lot of
guys down. You just had to hang in there,
keep playing as hard as you could and not
get discouraged. "
His resolve was tested in the fi nal round
by a double bogey on the par-3 eighth. " I
made bad swings on 8 and 9, " he said. " But
then I birdied 10 and 11 and got going in
the right direction again. "
After a par at the 12th,
Constable made another birdie at the 514yard,
par-5 13th. He missed a 15-footer for
birdie at the 14th, but gained a stroke on
Bell and Riddering and increased his lead
to four shots.
At the 15th, Constable missed a 35-foot
birdie putt but made the 7-footer coming
back. " That was a big putt, " he said.
" You just don't want to be losing strokes at
that stage of the tournament. Things can
change so fast, and you need to make your
par putts. I hit a perfect putt, and it went
right in the center, which is exactly what
you want to see. "
Riddering, who nearly holed his chip
for birdie at the 15th, got to within three
shots of Constable when his 15-footer
for birdie fell at the par-5 16th. The
gap was reduced to two when
Constable bogeyed his
Donald Constable
nemesis, the 17th. Meanwhile, Schultz had
just fi nished off his 66, with birdies at 15,
17 and 18. So he and Riddering were both
at minus 4, two behind Constable.
" I'm not that much of a numbers guy, "
Constable said. " But I knew what the guys
in my group were doing, and I knew that
anyone in a group in front of me was going
to have to shoot a really low score to beat
me, as long as I shot under par. "
If Constable was nervous playing the
343-yard 18, he didn't show it. He hit a
3-iron off the tee into the right side of the
fairway, and from there he hit a wedge to
about eight feet. He could have three-putted
and still won, but instead he made it for
his fi nal birdie.

MGA Tournament offi cials measured drives at the 429-yard, par-4 second hole, White
Bear Yacht Club's No. 3 handicap hole. This hole ranked fi fth most diffi cult, with a scoring
average of 4.454. Am champ Donald Constable hit the fairway in the fi rst two rounds,
averaged 288 yards and made par all three rounds.
