That's what Don Kunshier's collection of
golf memorabilia has been since the late
1980s.
Kunshier, 71, of North Oaks, was approached
in the late 1980s by Warren
Rebholz, then the executive director of
the MGA. Rebholz offered Kunshier the
chance to help build Minnesota's fi rst golf
Hall of Fame. More than two decades later,
Kunshier, a retired Unisys engineer and
computer designer, is now the defacto
MGA Golf Historian and curator to the
new Minnesota Golf Hall of Fame, which
reopened June 22 after a major redesign.
" What hits people when they visit is
how vast the Minnesota golf experience is
in terms of state and national championships
and the players who have done
well, like Patty Berg and Tom Lehman, "
Kunshier says.
Kunshier divides his time between golf at
Bunker Hills (he's a member of the men's
club and still plays in the Unisys company
league), volunteering at MGA championships
and qualifi ers and looking for the
next great acquisition for the Hall of Fame.
One of his more interesting artifacts-
donated by a man who found it at a garage
sale-is a state amateur trophy (pictured at
right) won by Jimmy Johnston, who went

on a tear, winning seven consecutive amateurs,
1921-1927. That trophy is on display
among other bits of history in the museum's
dozen or so display cases.
" When someone donates a club or other
material, that's very special, " says Kunshier.
" When you see the extent of [the Hall of
Fame artifacts], it's pretty amazing. "
