Like Sligo, Lahinch is home to a major
amateur championship, the South of Ireland
Amateur Open, and images of past
champs adorn the trophy cases inside the
clubhouse. Lahinch's clubhouse is worthy
of a visit on its own merit, for the commanding
panoramas of the fi rst tee and
holes 2, 3 and 18.
In 2003, the club completed yet another
Lahinch
Since its founding in 1892, Lahinch has
seen more makeovers than a B-movie star.
Old Tom Morris redesigned the course
in 1894, and an example of his work is
the blind par-3 5th, which plays 105-167
yards. The green is nearly hidden, and the
only clue to the direction of the hole is a
white stone marker placed on the obscuring
dune.
In 1907 George Gibson redesigned
the course to cope with the arrival of the
Haskell ball, which was made of rubber.
Later, in 1927, Alistair MacKenzie (who
designed Cypress Point and Augusta National)
put his mark on Lahinch by incorporating
more of the dunes and natural
fl ow of the land.

Lahinch is famous for its clubhouse barometer,
a non-functioning indicator that
simply reads, " See Goats. "
Doonbeg Golf Club
Doonbeg is another small town off
the beaten path. The golf course it's
named after runs along a mile and
a half of crescent-shaped beach
and is lorded over by a mammoth
lodge that looks like a movie set
for Wuthering Heights. Where farmers
once plowed fi elds, vacation cottages
now sit-but that doesn't detract from the
views of the fi rst tee of this Greg Normandesigned
links. Although comparatively
compact at 4,729-6,911 yards, the course
