this way we were able to establish fairly
good greens. "
Minikahda's course opened on July 15,
1899. Soon thereafter, Jaffray won its fi rst
club championship. His friend Irving
Corse was astonished at how quickly Jaffray
became an exceptional player: " He
had told me only fi ve years before he won
the Trans Mississippi and the State Amateur
in 1906, 'Corse, I can't get on to this
darned game. I'm going back to cricket.' "
He got onto it by playing Minikahda
alone with only a cleek. He developed an
exceptional short game, and if a specifi c
shot gave him trouble, he spent hours
practicing until he got it right.
William Watson's lessons were slow to
sink in with most of the other Minikahda
players. On July 7, 1900, the St. Paul Daily
Globe reported that the men's team from
Minikahda had been drubbed by a team
from Glen View Club in Illinois. " The
visiting team outclassed the Minneapolis
players in every part of the game, " the
paper reported. Only Jaffray and Charles
Deaver managed to win their matches.
They didn't
fare much better with
the local competition. The July 22 Daily
Globe reported that the Minikahda men
lost for the seventh consecutive time to
the visiting team from Town & Country.
Jaffray, who shot near par in defeating
Mike Doran (who won the State Amateur
title in 1903), seemed to be the only
Minikahda golfer who benefi ted from a
new set of bunkers that had been built
to toughen up the course-though the
Daily Globe reporter didn't seem terribly
clear on the rules regarding hazards:
" Doran had very hard luck in the play
out. His drive from the third tee carried
about 250 yards, and fi nally landed in a
bunker-put on the course to penalize a
poor second stroke. There is no ground
rule covering a driven ball landing in this
bunker, and Jaffray made Doran play out,
the latter losing the hole thereby. "
The following year, Minikahda hired
Watson's brother Martin as golf instructor.
The May 15, 1901, Minneapolis
Journal reported, " It is to be regretted
